Hair Cut & April Fool's Joke

SO, here's the story... I had taken the day off of work on Thursday for various reasons. All thoughout the day, I kept getting this urge to chop off all of my hair. Really, I've been getting these urges for at least 6 months! Evan had begged me to keep my hair long at least until his birthday. I called up my sister and like any good sister, she supported me in taking the plunge and chopping off all of my hair to donate (again) to locks of love.

SO, I did it! I'm really not sure how much I chopped off. All I know is that my hair when pulled straight would touch the base of my back and now my hair is above my shoulders. You do the math.

While at the hair dressers, my sister gets the BEST April Fool's joke idea ever! She has the thought that since my students don't KNOW I cut my hair, I should wear a hat to school hiding all of my hair underneath. I should use the ponytail they cut off to fake out my students and then pretend to pull out my hair and set down the pony tail.

I found the perfect knitted hat I purchased at Banana Republic and put my hair underneath. I stealthily attached my cut off ponytail. I used this not only for my 2nd period class (I chickened out in my 1st period!), but also in my coworker's class (she pretended to pull out my hair. Her students screamed when my hair fell out!). It was AWESOME! You should have seen the look on my students faces as I said "Man, my hair is really bothering me" and pretended to pull out my hair and then set it down on my desk. I went along as if nothing had happened. My students freaked out. It was awesome.

I heart April Fool's jokes (well, the ones I get to play on others). Here is a post from a few years back with my FAVORITE April Fool's Joke.

Hair Donor Extraordinaire

The last time I cut my hair was on April 9th, 2007 in preparation for a two-week trip to Hawaii to visit Evan. (This was obviously BEFORE I moved there.) 19 months is a long time to go without a hair cut, yet I've gone longer and been able to handle it well. This morning, however, I could wait no longer to cut my hair. My hair was absolutely driving me CRAZY!

As soon as I realized it was more than long enough to donate, I scheduled an appointment and drove over to get my hair cut. I honestly can't even tell you how freeing it was to get my hair cut and styled today. I was SO giddy! I felt like a new woman! All in all, I think I ended up cutting off about 14-15 inches of hair, although all of that isn't included in the hair I'm donating. I didn't tell Evan I was getting it cut, but told him I had a surprise for him. He was surprised, but thinks it looks great. Here are some before and after pictures today:

BEFORE (Let it be known that this is frizzy, unkempt morning hair and it not an accurate representation of what my hair normally looks like.)

The AFTER product:

Oh yeah, did I mention that Evan and his dad got a Hobie cat today? Yep, they did. They were both super excited about it! They got it home and already starting washing it and setting up the mast. Here is a picture of them working on it as it was getting dark:

Locks of Love

Off and on throughout my life, I've had long hair. (See above picture circa 2001)Generally, I'll grow my hair out for a year or two and then chop it off. (see below picture circa 2004)

This is a pattern I repeat often mostly because it's expensive to get my hair cut, my hair is fairly healthy (I rarely blow dry it or straighten it) and so I only get it cut once every 1-1/2 years or so. For years, I've wanted to donate my hair to locks of love or some such organization that would provide wigs for children who are in need for whatever medical reason. 7 years ago, my sister cut TWENTY INCHES off my hair randomly late one night and I wasn't able to donate it. This process of cutting so much of my hair off has been repeated SO often, but I just haven't had the opportunity to donate that hair.

Recently, it's come to my attention that my hair is starting to get long again from the last time I cut it, April 9th, 2007. This time I am consciously making the decision to donate my hair to locks of love. Even though I want a hair cut RIGHT NOW, I've decided to grow it out for a few more months to make sure that it's good and long enough. And then I'm going to donate it to Locks of Love! Check out their website to find out more information about this non-profit organization. I'm really excited to donate my hair. I know that it's for a good cause.

(In the picture below you can sort of see how long my hair is getting, although it's grown at least another inch since this picture was taken at my sister's wedding. Also, consider that my hair is anywhere for 4-6 inches longer when pulled straight. It's getting long! I'll try to get a more recent picture of my hair! )
